Robert "Bob" Turpin

a message from Scott Turpin  saturpin12@gmail.com

For those that remember us, my Dad Robert (Bob) Turpin passed away Monday, February 22nd.  It has been a long time since we were active regulars but I wanted to get the word out for those we flew with and or knew about his passing and what the funeral arrangements will be.  Unfortunately, these types of events are what usually bridges the gaps in time as the years pass by but we had a lot of fun back then and it would be great to use this occasion to catch up.  As a testament to his building ability, I plan to have a GeeBee Sportster and my Phoenix 8 pattern plane to honor him and his incredible ability to "ad lib" when the plans were less than perfect and his crazy ability to lay down an awesome paint job.  Both planes are now 35 plus years old and have weathered the years pretty well.

Funeral arrangements are the following:
Elton Black & Sons
1233 Union Lake Road
White Lake, MI 48386
248.363.7135
Date: 3/6/21
Time: 11-2 (visitation) >> 2pm (service)

Sincerely,

Scott(Scotty) Turpin

"Scare in the Air" inter-club event, UFO vs Signal Seekers, Sept 26, 2020

Saturday Sept 26, 2020, was a very memorable day that will be long remembered by many. On that date, 14 (7 per side) of the finest flyers in the State of Michigan fiercely competed for the 10th time for the famous "Scare in the Air" inter club trophy. Flying skills and emotions were on the highest levels as the lead changed 3 times prior to the final event, the famous "egg bomb drop." The UFO members heroically rose to the occasion and dominated this event by taking 1st thru 6th places. The much honored "Scare in the Air" trophy thus changed hands once again, and will be proudly displayed by the UFO for the entire coming year.

I would like to thank Scott, Greg and Bill for helping me with this memorable event. A special thanks also goes to Jim for the fantastic job he did as "Chef" in preparing the feast we all shared together. Pictures are provided, below, so that we can relive this memorable day over and over again in the future. Please note the extreme emotions on many of the faces, a clear indication of the importance of this day in both clubs history.

The  1st Rich Utkan Memorial fly was an overwhelming success. Great weather, great food and great friendships all contributed to an extremely successful event.  Over 40 aircraft and helicopters were flown during the event. The food was  fantastic  with a great variety of items being available.  A special thanks to Ken Wade for being a fantastic  BBQ cook.  I'm am sure Rich was with us during his memorial day and was extremely pleased at being honored. If you were there, you can relive the wonderful day via the pictures that captured many aspects of the day.  If you were not, then please join us for a picture review and make sure you make it next year.

Thank you Rick I couldn't have said it better myself.

I am so glad that we had such good weather, a good turnout of friends, and a great flying event.  I am very proud of our club for hosting such a great event.  I look forward to the 2021 event with much anticipation.

Farewell to our dear friend

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that our fellow club member Richard Utkan passed away.  This tragic event occurred Saturday September 21st, 2019.  He laid down to take a nap and did not get up.  Richard was a distinguished pilot, builder, US Air Force veteran, and recipient of the Carl Goldberg vital people award from the AMA.  Most of all Richard was our friend.

He was a member of the UFO club since records were kept.  Richard joined in 1984.  A member of the lawn crew and a club trainer,  Richard would help other members and provide advice, and help both on and off the field.  Richard pushed the envelope with new building techniques and scratch-built designs that were often very successful.

This truly is a detriment to the RC community and to our club.  Richard was the Vice-President of the EFO, the electric only spin off of the UFO club that has a field down in Lyon Township near Ann Arbor.  The EFO members include Keith Shaw and Ken Myers editor of the Ampeer, the oldest electric RC publication.  Richard was among the founding fathers of electric RC, especially modern Electric RC.  Among his peers are the best and most famous pioneers of RC flight.

It has been suggested that we name the UFO annual corn roast in honor of Richards memory.  It was also suggested that we name the field after Richard.  We all miss his unique laugh and conversation.

Hi Folks,

Attached in the link below are some pictures today's activity.

On behalf of all the club members we would like to thank all those who  organized and contributed to the great success of this fun filled day.

A special thanks to Bill who purchased and donated much needed gravel to fill the holes in our entrance way and parking lot.  Thanks also to Bill and Greg who spent a lot of time and effort spreading the gravel.  Thus,  the lead pictures shown highlights them and the great job they were just completing.

Hope you enjoy reliving a wonderful day  captured in the pictures below.

Rick

New woodstove will keep us warm.  For those who have not been to the field in a while, we have a new woodstove.  Take a look at this beauty.  We still have the barrel stove as a backup.  Come out and visit with us this winter to see how warm we can make the impound with the new stove.
